The steel erection industry is being confronted with challenges similar to those of other construction trades. In order to meet occupational safety and health standards as promulgated by the United States Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the steel erection contractor has been challenged to be proactive in developing and implementing all the "in-house" requirements to achieve occupational safety and health compliance. It is wrong to think that the only OSHA standard that affects the steel erection industry is 20 CFR 1926.750 through .752 (Subpart R). Although some OSHA standards have been updated or revised, most have been around for at least ten years and many have been in place since the inception of the OSH Act of 1970. Based on the fact that most of the standards are not new, and the OSHA citations that have been, and continue to be issued are similar in nature, it is the steel erection certification initiative that will build on and unify the applicable areas of OSHA compliance.
