The relative molecular mass and relative molecular mass distribution of lignosulfonates were measured by gel permeation chromatography. A refractive index detector and an ultraviolet detector were used to record the elution profiles. The data of relative molecular mass were obtained from the calibration line and the results of laser light scattering respectively. A solution of 0.1 mol/L NaNO_3 with pH 7 was shown to be optimum for suppressing the secondary separation effect in determining the relative molecular mass of lignosulfonate. The differences in the shape of the elution profiles and the data of relative molecular mass by different methods demonstrate that the technique of acquiring the data has significant influences on the experimental results.
