Type-304 stainless steel is very popular and widely used in applications where high corrosion resistance is required. However, corrosion is initiated by destroying the passive film in high concentration of chloride ions containing environment. From previous research, it was found that metal cations have an effective inhibitory influence on corrosion of mild steel in Cl~- containing aqueous solution. In the case of Type-304 stainless steel corrosion, it is still unknown the effect of metal cations in high concentration of Cl~- aqueous solution, because the oxide film of stainless steel and mild steel is different in composition The hardness of metal cation, X, have been introduced as a corrosion indicator by some researcher. In the case of high concentration of Cl~- aqueous solution, it is still unknown the possibility of X as a corrosion indicator and the mechanism of metal cationic effects on the passive film is also remains unknown. Therefore, the present research purpose is to find out the effects of metal cations and the corrosion mechanism on Type-304 stainless steel in 0.5 M Cl~- containing aqueous solution.
