When RTZ and CRA formed Rio Tinto in 1995, interested observers waited to see whether the anticipated 'synergies' would deliver the promised savings or whether a poorly focused, unwieldy beast would ensue. As it turned out, the savings took some time to flow but the combined group is now realising an improvement to the bottom line to the tune of hundreds of million of dollars a year.
