The Nebraska Distributed Wind Generation Project consists of two Zond Z50 750 kW wind turbines installed in Springview, Nebraska. These turbines are connected directly to the local 12,500 volt electrical distribution circuit so the variable power output from the turbines with varying wind speeds raises a concern about power quality on the distribution line with customers on the same line. Because of this concern, a power quality meter was installed on the distribution circuit in KBR Rural Public Power District's substation one mile from the site of the wind turbines prior to the construction of the turbines. With this meter, power quality data taken with the turbines running can be compared with baseline power quality data that was taken before the wind turbines started operating. This paper presents such a comparison. It will provide a background of the NDWG project, a description of the concern about power quality, a description of the power quality test equipment used and its installation, a discussion of the metering data, and a listing of power quality conclusions.
