Polymeric materials such as FRP are used chemical plant under acidic or alkaline condition for anti corrosion. These materials also degradate under severe condition, then they show obvious change in chemical structures due to hydrolysis or other reactions. Sometimes chemical degradations result in fracture of these equipments. Therefore, it is expected that the on-line monitoring system for the condition of equipment will be developed. In this study, possibility of new on-line monitoring system made by smart materials was examined. In order to detect the penetration of NaOH solution into unsaturated polyester, a smart materials with a plastic optical fiber sensor embedded in matrix resin were investigated.
