Owing to the wide utilization of tool steel in machine tools and dies, excellent hardness, toughness and strength are the most important valuation criteria of tool steels. An innovative route for manufacturing tool steel products by using semi-solid processing technology was raised in our past study. Compared with conventional multi-pass hot rolling route, this innovative route can manufacture tool steel products with lower time and energy consumption. However, the mechanical properties of semi-solid formed products are inferior to those of commercial rolled material, even after optimal heat treatment due to the microstructure of semi-solid processed metal. A subsequent hot plastic deformation are necessary to improve their mechanical properties as shown in Fig. 1. The effects of subsequent hot plastic deformation on the microstructure and mechanical prosperities of semi-solid processed Cr-V-Mo hot working steel were investigated.
