Together with the advent of powerful software, the introduction of relatively low-priced and high-speed computers has revolutionized the use of numerical methods in engineering applications. Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) has provided design engineers with the opportunity to simulate the behavior of new products and their manufacturing process in an economical way whilst they are still on the drawing board at prototype stage. CAE would reduce the risk of not satisfying current safety standards, manufacturing problems at a later date, and minimize the costs of wasted tooling and raw materials etc. This article presents a case study of using CAE techniques to simulate the drop test of a portable electronic device known as PDA and demonstrate how CAE could help in manufacturing and product design.
