This experimental investigation was conducted to identify characteristics of fracture of high performance concrete (HPC) due to exposure to high temperatures. The spalling test results reveal that moisture content and strength are the two main factors governing spalling. The R-curve flattening shows that the crack growth resistance has been significantly reduced by elevated temperature. Explosive spalling is an extreme case of the internal cracking. All the results confirmed the vapor pressure mechanism for spalling behavior which should be more significant for denser concrete.
