Effects of time-dependent contaminant injection into the saturated zone of a mine waste deposit are investigated in a stochastic-Lagrangian framework. The estimated field-scale contaminant discharge illustrates the effects of temporally variable contaminant injection and heterogeneity in the properties that govern advective-reactive transport in the saturated zone. Based on these results, some important aspects of predictive modelling and monitoring of remediation effects are identified and discussed.
