Researchers have recognized that monitoring of industrial processes for time variations is critical when optimizing transient unit operations (English et al. [1]). Transient flow behavior is typically found in multiphase flow systems where mixing or dispersion equipment is used to contact one phase with another. In the present study, a novel method was developed for monitoring and analyzing variations in two-phase flow. The process studied was a system of feed piping and proprietary spray nozzle combined to provide optimal spray for reactor feed injection. Using wavelet transform analysis of pressure fluctuations measured in the flow, a significant improvement in atomization efficiency was achieved by modifying and controlling the flow pattern in the feed piping.
