CAREER: Applications and Development of Physical Programming in Engineering Design With Real Time Visualization

This paper examines the use of optimization in industry, and identifies critical development areas. The effective and efficient use of optimization is singularly dependent on the adequacy of the objective function used in the optimization process. Yet, the most popular methods for forming objective functions are known to be defective in critical ways. The methods we use today generally date back to the days when the notion of applying computational optimization to complex practical problems was largely a dream. To bring the practical application of optimization to the next level, three critical areas of research should be addressed: (1) The formation of the objective function, (2) The physically meaningful visualization of the optimization process, and (3) The user-friendly and effective application of optimization. Each of these areas is explicitly addressed by Physical Programming.
