Binaphthyl polymers possess a twisted, nonplanar structure due to their large dihedral angle ranging from 60~120 °C. Such a unique structure may offer some interesting behaviors, such as high fluorescence efficiency, high solubility, and high thermal stability. In this presentation, a series of new binaphthlyl-based copolymers consisting of triphenylamine (TPA), tetraphenyldiaminobiphenyl (TPD), thiophene (Th), oxdiazole (OXD), phenyl (Ph), quinoline (PQ) and cyano-phenylenevinylene (CN-PPV) moieties were synthesized. According to the polymerization positions of the binaphthyl units, these copolymers can be divided into two groups, that are major-groove polymers where the polymerization occurs at 6,6'-positions and minor-groove polymers where the polymerization occurs at 3,3'-positions.
