Current research on supplier involvement in product development focuses mainly on technical aspects, organizational views and the relationship between OEM and supplier. The market view and therefore the consumer needs have consistently been neglected. A model of product concept generation is introduced to explain how failure to bring together information about consumer needs and supplier capabilities to the product concept generation leads to suboptimal products. Based on it a method is developed to classify consumer needs. For each type of needs an interaction process is proposed to avoid suboptimal products.
