Seprophytic fungi from communities (of certain structure and function) in the soil and the communities may represent the soil environment. The fungi community effects a pathogen (=summary biotic effect) and the effect reflects the infleunce of the environment on the pathogen. The authors propose to treat the summary biotic effect as an environment index which provides us with information about the environment's effect on the pathogen, and thus the prospects of the pathogen in the environment. It is of great importance to recognize biotic realitions in soil and to manage plant diseases by influencing soil fungi communities with cultural practices, plant species composition and rotation, and other cheep agrotechnological means, very proecological, andconstituting an important part of integrated plant disease management.
