Effect of soil solarization with plastic film for management of soilborne pests in agriculture

Plastics are widely used for domestic and other general purposes. Recently, they are extensively used even in agricultural and horticultural crops as drip irrigation, green houses and mulching, nursery bags, packing of fruits and vegetables, out doorfood grain storage & transporation, canal lining, silage cover, milk packing, etc. (Gill, 1990). However, their use for plant protection in terras of management of soilborne pests has been very little explored in our country. Among the various types of plastic film, clear or transparent films are generally practiced for controlling soilborne pathogenic organisms and weeds by way of soil solarization or slow soil pasteurization. Patel et al., (1991 a) observed that nematode infested bidi tobacco nurserybeds covered with 400 gauge (LDPE clear film for two months during summer (April 15 to June 15) yielded 219 and 152 % higher numbers of transplants and total seedlings respectively. The suppression in root-knot disease, weed count and weight was 75, 77 and 70 % respectively over control. However, results of large scale on farm trial (1000 m ) conducted with 100 gauge LLDPE clear film tarping for 15 days indicated that there was 412 % increase in production of transplantable seedlings with 75 and 81 % reduction in root-knot disease and weeds respectively giving not realization of Rs. 8432/1000 m over control (ICBR 1:6.12).
