Control of leaf crinkle disease of urd bean (Vigna mungo L.) by some plant extracts

Plant extracts of piper, turmeric, zinger, onion and garlic were tested at various dilutions for the control of urd bean leaf crinkle disease both, at glass house as well as field conditions. Piper extract could completely eliminate the disease followed by significant disease control by garlic and turmeric extracts. Leaf crinkle is an important disease of urd bean (Vigna mungo L. (Hepper)) in North India. The causal agent is a sap transmissible seed borne virus. The role of insect vector has not beenconclusively established so far. To a large extent, the vims is carried in the seeds of urd bean. Therefore, attempts were made to combat the disease under field conditions by treatment of seeds with some plant extracts, heat (dry and moist) and field application of insecticides. The efficacy of the plant extracts, individually and in combination with neem (Azadirachta indica) soap, was also examined in vitro and in vivo in the glass house.
