The effect of leaf crinkle virus on nodulation and bacterial population of nodules of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were studied. On inoculated plants the virus reduced the nodule number, fresh and dry weight of nodules. The maximum reduction ofnodule number, fresh and dry weight of nodules were 53.70, 55.40 and 54.04 per cent respectively over control, when plants were inoculated with the virus at 5 days after planting. The lowest reduction was 18.52, 19.05 and 18.32 per cent in plants inoculated at 35 days after planting respectively. The virus infection significantly reduced the bacterial population in nodules of inoculated plants. The bacterial (Rhizobium phaseoli) population was 15.33 X 10~9 and 46.00 X 10~9 CFU/ g root nodule in plantsinoculated with the virus at 5 and 35 days after planting respectively.
