Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is a winter growing annual grain legume possessing relatively good drought resistance and some frost resistance. It is a low input crop of the semi-arid tropics (Saxena, 1987) because of its adaptability to varying soil and environmental conditions. It shows substantial plasticity in growth and development as different plant densities and row spac-ings, and in its low water requirements (Beech and Leach, 1988). It is a relatively new crop in Australia, where it was first grown commercially in 1980. IT is widespread in the sub tropical wheatlands of the eastern Australia. The main chickpea growing areas of Australia are South-East Queensland, North-East New South Wales and Western Victoria.
