The IRC has carried out an intensive research and development programme in the areas of Ni alloys, Ti alloys and TiAl-based alloys since it was set up in 1989. In view of the importance of the cost of introducing new alloys and new processes into industry the programme has always been concerned not just with investigating new processes-and developing new alloys, but has considered cost-effective approaches to these fields. This paper will focus on work in the area of the development of new alloys for aeroengines and the techniuques used for cost-effective production of components from these alloys.
