The prospects for continued use of hard disk drives as the dominant method of data storage remain as strong as ever. While beginning to show some signs of slowing down, the hard disk drive industry is still being driven by the rapid increase in available storage capacity afforded by aggressive areal density growth. From 1998 to the end of 2001 areal density was doubling every 12 months.During 2002 the pace has slowed somewhat to below 100% per year growth rate.
