An electrochemical glucose sensor has been designed to function in a continuous glucose monitoring product.The biosensor is constructed using integrated-circuit fabrication techniques to provide for miniaturization and reproducible mass production.The sensor is designed for short-term in-vivo use (3 days) with insertion typically located in the subcutaneous tissue of the abdomen.The MiniMed Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGMS) was FDA approved in June of 1999 and commercial distribution began in mid July.Performance of the CGMS will be discussed in more detail below.
