Active,passive and inert electrodes in fluorine electrochemistry.Some recent studies in triethylamine - tris hydrogen fluoride

In selective electrochemical fluorination,Pt is used as an anode,which functions as an inert electronic conductor.In electrochemical perfluorination and high purity NF3 production,Ni covered by a passive NiF_2 layer serves as the anode.Carbon anode is used in F_2 generation and O_2 evolution reaction in fluoride melts.Formation of fluoride film,highly resistive passive layer and even electrochemical oxidation to fluorocarbons occur on this electrode.Cu acts as a reference electrode of second kind in this medium.The electrochemistry of these electrodes,with some recent results thrown out by the studies in triethylamine-tris-hydrogen fluoride (TEA.3HF) are presented and comparatively discussed in this paper.
