Offensive odours from the hog industry are gaining increasingly adverse public attention.During land disposal,there is a great potential for release of odorous components to the atmosphere,as the manure is sprayed with a fine mist of water.Odorous,reduced nitrogen and sulfur compounds are present in hog manure because the mammalian gut is an anaerobic environment,where anaerobic bacteria thrive by reducing oxidized organic compounds.Although the odour-causing compounds can,in principle,be oxidized to less pungent substances,purging the liquid manure tank with air is insufficient to achieve and maintain oxygenated conditions because of the high bacterial load and biological oxygen demand (BOD).We are therefore interested in determining whether electrochemical oxidation might be used to "neutralize" the odour of the liquid phase of hog manure immediately prior to land disposal.
