Two recent developments in our laboratories have led to unprecedented advances in optical waveguiding platforms.These technological advances have stemmed from the development of:1)the electroactive integrated optical waveguide (EA-IOW)and 2)the broadband coupled IOW.The first advance was in the creation of an electroactive waveguide structure,called the EA-IOW,achieved by deposition of a transparent,conductive indium tin oxide electrode material,allowing for simultaneous collection of electrochemical response and spectrometric response of surface bound redox active molecules.This is a "first generation"device which has been used to measure spectroelectrochemical responses of surface adsorbed species at an unprecedented level of sensitivity.
