Many geriatric horses (>20 years old) are able to maintain good to excellent body condition and health on normal maintenance rations. However, weight loss is not uncommon in old horses, especially in severe weather. Geriatric horses often suffer theadverse effects of irreparable dental abnormalities (tooth loss, wave mouth), chronic intestinal parasitism and pituitary dysfunction. If renal or hepatic function is reduced, tolerance of excess calcium and edible oils respectively may be adversely affected. Chronic pain associated with arthritic changes may exacerbate problems with appetite.
