The formation of non-equilibrium phases at surfaces of austenitic X6CrNiTi1810, ferritic X10CrA118 and austenitic-ferritic X2CrNiMoN2253 stainless steels modified by nitrogen plasma immersion ion implantation at 300 °C and 400 °C is studied using Conversion Electron Mossbauer Spectroscopy. The nitrogen depth profiles are followed by Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy. The results of the phase analysis are related to the surface hardness measured for each treatment.
