Stainless steel-an innovative answer

Stainless steel is a relatively new material. The use of stainless steel in bar form, both as a reinforcing bar and tie bar, is in its infancy. The virtues of stainless for these applications are abundant. With regard to fault free structures, the technical advantages of stainless steel are proven and infinite life is predictable. In contrast the corrosion of conventional carbon steel reinforcing bar is causing serious problems in existing RC structures.The current restraint to greater usage of stainless steel is the perceived high cost. A new technique of providing reinforcing ribs and threads on stainless steel round bar is described. The end result is a highly versatile, lower cost stainless steelproduct. This is confirmed by weight savings of up to 40%, compared with conventionally machined stainless steel bar products.
