This paper describes a range of "SMART" telephones, developed for the rail industry, capable of providing regular health status and call data. Its main focus is a new generation customer Information Point that integrates with public address andvisual passenger information systems.A Telephone Management System (TMS) has also been developed that can monitor telephones connected to a public switched network, a private network or cellular-based fixed location telephones. Enhancements to the TMS maintenance system allow it to sendoperational messages to Information Point telephones to show current train information on a display panel, which is updated regularly using "silent" calls from a central point.
