"Technical approach to local agro-environmental operations: Results and means". Agro-environment is part of the new CAP. At local level, it is also a significant component of livestock farming systems using rangelands. The authors present a critical analysis of their experiences in implementing local agro-environmental operations in southeastern France. They have been frequently involved in work on the technical aspects of such operations. The presentation of a real situation, the "Grands Causses de Lozere" operation allows to point out major issues for future operations: (i) the identification of various forms of livestock farms using rangelands; (ii) the confrontation of available technical references with the heterogeneity of target grazeable pastures, while integrating herd's highly selective grazing behaviour; and (iii) the contradiction between contracts based on yearly land-use patterns and shrub encroachment dynamics. Scheduling is then a cornerstone for livestock and technical advice developments.
