A report on field trials of a novel wet scrubber for marine diesel engines

Marine Energy Limited (MEL) has developed a novel technology which is ideally suited to ship engine exhaust gas scrubbing. The MEL exhaust successfully removes soot, SO{sub}2, a small percentage of NO{sub}x, and a large proportion of waste heat from exhaust, while not sacrificing an inordinate amount of capital cost, deck space, or engine power. The recovered heat can be used to offset oil-fired boilers or hot water systems in the shipboard energy budget. Pilot-plant trials of the technology were recently completed aboard the Canadian Coast Guard Icebreaker Louis S. St. -Laurent, the largest diesel-powered icebreaker in the world. The pilot plant showed particulate removal rates of 70-85%, SO{sub}2 removals of more than 95%, and 75% recovery' of waste exhaust heat. This report describes testing, and results from tests of a pilot plant Exhaust scrubber for marine diesel engines.
