A method based on crack compliance technique is presented in this paper to estimate the near-surface axial residual stresses of a short hollow cylinder attached to a plate. A circular cut of progressively increasing depth is introduced into the cylinder to release the residual stresses by a hand-held rotary cutting tool. The axial strains due to the residual stress released during cutting are measured by a strain gauge near the cut. The residual stress distribution is estimated from the FEA-generated compliance functions and the measured strains. The method is reasonably accurate and has distinct advantages compared to other techniques.
