The mean stress sensitivity of the fatigue strength is evaluated for the various titanium alloy classes, i. e., α, near-α, (α+β) and metastable β alloys. It is shown that an anomalous mean stress sensitivity (AMSS) is restricted to near-α and (α+β) alloys. Methods for reducing AMSS in duplex microstructures of near-α and (α+β) alloys by varying thermomechanical treatments are determined.
