Influences on Volumetric Flow Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems

Volumetric flow monitors are essential to the Acid Rain Program because they are required to calculate the mass of each pollutant emitted. This study was performed to determine if flow monitor performance is significantly influenced by monitoring equipment, boiler characteristics, pollution controls, or plant demographics when performance is measured by relative accuracy test audits. Electronic data reports submitted by electric utilities to the Acid Rain Program in 1996 are used to perform this empirical study. The raw data was interpreted and processed into graphs to illustrate the correlation between monitor performance and each plant characteristic. Conclusions are drawn from the graphs using statistical methods.
