Development of a PC-Workstation Cluster for Groundwater Modeling

This paper describes the development of a PC-workstation cluster for groundwater modeling using MSTS (Multiphase Subsurface Transport Simulator) developed by Pacific Northwest national Laboratory (Nichols and White, 1993; White and Nichols, 1993). In this implementation, a network of computers is used to set up a system that facilitates data input, simulation execution and visualization, and the assessment of simulation results. Further, this system could provide and efficient platform for comparing simulation results obtained using GMS-MODFLOW and MSTS. GMS is the Department of Defense Groundwater Modeling System and it includes MODFLOW (MODular three-dimensional finite-difference ground-water FLOW model) which was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) [McDonald and Harbaugh, 1988]. Although MSTS is the primary modeling system discussed here, the ability to run other models using the setup described from one of the iteration scheme to solve the coupled equations for water conservation, air conservation, and energy conservation. The fourth set of equations (dilute species solute mass conservation) is solved sequentially with the coupled governing equations with a direct integrated finite-difference scheme. MSTS is available free of charge from Pacific Northwest national laboratory, which is operated by Battelle Memorial Institute for the U.S. Department of Energy.
