New Annex VI to MARPOL 73/78 and IMO NO{sub}x Technical Code were adopted by IMO (International Maritime Organization) in September 1997. According to Regulation 13 Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) of the Annex VI, this regulation shall apply to: (1) each diesel engine with a power output of more than 130 kW which is installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January 2000; and (2) each diesel engine with a power output of more than 130 kW which undergoes a major conversion on or after 1 January 2000. While the requirements of the regulation could not be enforced before the entry force of the Annex vi, each engine which will become, retrospectively, subject to the provisions of the Regulation 13 upon its entry force, should be certified in accordance with the requirements of the Technical Code as mentioned in IMO MEPC Circular letter. Therefore, most of engines which are being currently built should be tested and surveyed in accordance with the NO{sub}x Technical Code. Countermeasures have been prepared for the NO{sub}x regulation for some 10 years. Recently IMO NO{sub}x certification tests were conducted successfully on a propulsion engine and two auxiliary engines in compliance with the Technical Code. This paper outlines the IMO NO{sub}x test and survey on a 2-stroke, low-speed, crosshead, marine propulsion engine, 6S6OMC Mk6 carried out at Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in May 1999.
