Databases and information systems (IS) of the aral sea basin states

Until 1991 water resource planning and use in the Central Asian Republics (CAR -Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,Tadjikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan), particularly as regards the Amu-Darya and Sir-Darya Rivers; were carried out in accordance with the priorities and long-term plans of the former Soviet Union without regard to the interests and needs of the CAR. Soviet policies created very serious ecological and water problems in the Aral sea region. Solutions to those problems requires the establishment of a distributed database network. Cooperative data cooperative data collection and data sharing among the members of the CAR. Various technical and budgetary problems make the achievement of this goal difficult. This study discusses what is being done to overcome the obstacles.
