Senescence is the terminal phase in the life of a plant or a plant organ that leads ultimately to death. From many physiological, biochemical, and molecular studies of leaf senescence, it becomes clear that leaf cells undergo highly coordinated changes in cell structure, metabolism, and gene expression during senescence.
