This is the results of a materials process to produce a high density and high strength P/M component from a Nickel-Molybdenum-Manganese metal matrix composite (MMC) with continuous conventional atmosphere sintering. Processing includes conventional powder preparation, uniaxial compaction and sintering. Test samples were compacted at 414 through 690 MPa (30 TSI through 50 TSI) and sintered using cycles commonly applied to ferrous P/M. Strength, hardness, chemical composition and microstructures are presented. The metal matrix composite is formed during sintering within the alloy steel. Properties can be further enhanced and modified using low temperature tempering/aging, thus modifying the second phase hardening.
