Representation of correlated realistic weather is currently lacking across modelling and simulation systems. Many simulators and training devices have traditionally had primitive weather representations. Large scale weather modelling has been used in collective training exercises but has been based on historical patterns which have been difficult to replicate in individual training devices. The authors describe work that is being carried out under a UK Ministry of Defence research programme to investigate how the representation of weather may be improved allowing real time and near real time meteorological data to be used to provide a consistent, coherent and fine-scale modular weather service for heterogeneous simulators and training devices, allowing the extension of individual virtual training devices into applications including mission rehearsal and test and evaluation. Existing standards based approaches for weather data transmission are described and recommendations for future developments in this area are made.
