Analyzing the Marine Corps Infantry Squad Using the Infantry Warrior Simulation (IWARS)

The Testing, Experimentation, Assessment, Modeling and Simulation (TEAMS) facility at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, in a collaborative effort with the Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC) Operations Analysis Division (OAD), is developing Modeling and Simulation (M&S) baseline infantry scenarios to analyze the capabilities of the Marine Corps Infantry Squad. The Marine Advanced Unit, Infantry (MAUI) Study conducted by TEAMS and OAD involves three operational categories of baseline scenarios: Counterinsurgency (COIN) Operations in an urban environment, Ambush Operations in a mountainous environment, and Night Raid Operation in an urban environment. These scenarios were implemented in the Infantry Warrior Simulation (IWARS), an agent-based combat simulation tool created by Anteon Corporation and co-developed by the Natick Soldier Center. This paper expounds the six-step Infantry Baseline Scenario Development Process defined and introduced by the study team in a Fall 2007 SIW paper by breaking down the six-steps into sub-steps, which will help future construction and analysis of infantry scenarios. In addition, insights obtained from the construction and analysis of Ambush and Night Raid scenarios is discussed. The paper examines the findings and statistical insight regarding the COIN sensitivity analysis conducted and introduces the MAUI Sensitivity Analysis Process developed by the study team.
