Availability and structure of census data and other surveys on land use, crops, cropping systems, livestock and livestock systems in Sri Lanka

Although, 24 agro-ecological regions have been demarcated in Sri Lanka, the country can be broadly categorized into three climatic zones based on annual rainfall: the wet zone comprising 1.54 million ha, the intermediate zone of 0.8 million ha, and the dry zone of 4.17 million ha. Annual rainfall in these climatic zones varies form 2286-5080 mm in the wet zone. Whilst the north and east of the island, comprising the dry zone, is predominantly low-lying plains, the southcentral region or the wet zone is dominated by highlands.
