Adventitious incorporation of potassium into the synthetic pathto Ln_2L_3 (La = Nd; L = 1,2-benzenedisulfonate) yielded a heterobimetalliccomplex (K(OH_2)_2NdL_2) (1) as a minor, but crystallographicallycharacterizable product in a reaction yielding mainly (Nd_2L_3). Thebimetallic was found to have a novel polymeric framework containing chainsof neodymium(III) ions bridged by the disulfonate ligands. The Nd(III) chainsform extended sheet structures due to crosslinking by aquated potassium ions.
