This paper discusses the benefits of standardizing steam cycle chemistry feed, control, and monitoring. It includes a discussion of the prior feed, monitoring, and control environment; examines results before the standardization effort; provides examples of the damage that could have been avoided if standards had been in place; details the actions taken to standardize; discusses of the costs of standardization; studies results of the standardization process; and concludes with a review of the long term impact and benefits associated with standardization. The standardization effort focused on non-Cogen projects containing no yellow metal (no copper alloys), no deep bed condensate polishers, and demineralized cycle makeup water. The findings detailed in this document are broadly applicable to other systems, but the specific implementation (especially of the chemistry standards) may require modification for Cogen plants and other metallurgies. This paper details the benefits provided by standardizing cycle chemical feed systems for all new plants, standardizing chemical monitoring software at all plants, standardizing sample panel configuration at all new plants, modernizing and standardizing cycle chemical treatment, shifting primarily responsibility for sample panel analyzer maintenance to the operator level, and providing advanced steam cycle training at all plants.
