Since the introduction of the GT24/26 Advanced Cycle System gas turbines with the first unit at JCP&L Gilbert Station in September of 1995, over 35,000 hours of operating experience have been accumulated. This has been primarily on GT26 plants located in the UK, New Zealand and Germany. To date GT24/26 commitments are over 80 units, with potential MWs for GT24 power plants at 15,000 MWs and 9,300 MWs for GT24 power plants. The advanced GT24 and GT26 gas turbines were developed and optimized for combined cycle operation in markets requiring high efficiencies. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology with a unique sequential combustion system, combined cycle efficiencies of up to 58% with lowest emission levels can be achieved. With the high exhaust gas temperature of up to 640°C, the GT24 and GT26 are a perfect fit for repowering as well as greenfield combined cycle power projects. In North America, the first SS KA24-1 ICS units came on line this year and 2,200 MWs or more will be in operation in 99/2000. At this date five GT26 operating units in four power plants have accumulated about 29,000 hours and 850 starts. After extensive testing of the prototype GT24 at the Gilbert power station, simple cycle, the first GT26 unit into operation in Nov 1996 at Birr Switzerland, ABB Alstom's Gas Turbine Test Center. Commercial operation has commenced on power plants: 360 MW repowering RDK4, Germany; 730 MW Rocksavage power station in the UK and 360 MW single shaft power plant in Taranaki, New Zealand. While the GT26 power plants account for most of the operating hours, the GT24 power plants with sixteen units in operation by year end, of which thirteen are combined cycle, will soon contribute substantial hours to the 35,000 plus hours of operating experience.
