Experimental fine-structure branching ratio for Rb-Ar optical collision

Experimental ratio for branching into the fine structure levels of the R$-b$/5$+2$/P multiplet, as a consequence of an optical collision with A$-r$/, is reported. An optically thin gaseous mixture of R$-b$/ and low-density A$-r$/ is excited by a cw dye laser. The excited R$-b$/A$-r$/ molecule is dissociated into the R$-b$/5P$-1/2$/ or R$-b$/5P$-3/2$/, the branching ratio is defined as I(D$-1$/)/I(D$-2$/) where 1(D$-1$/) and I(D$-2$/) are measured intensities of the atomic R$-b$/D$-1$/ and D$-2$/ lines. The branching is determined for tuning ranging from 600 nm to 570 nm and in the A$-r$/ density range 2 to 8 $MUL 10$+17$/ cm$+$MIN@3$/. The ratio of the dissociation rates and the fine structure changing cross section are obtained. The ratio of the dissociation rates approaches 0.7 as a limit which is independent of the laser frequency.
