Strategic management can be defined as an ongoing process to analyze and learn from the internal and external environment, to establish directions and create strategies that helps to achieve the business goals. The interpretation of strategy is expressed from different perspective and different definitions in literature. Theories of strategic management provides different tools to analyze the situation and give the managers input to make the best decisions in order to reach desired goals. In this paper, I discuss management in small metal job shops and in what way the managers use available tools, related to theories of strategic management. The discussion is based on case studies in 30 small companies in Sweden an in the United States and shows that the management in small firms in many ways diverge from the theoretical concepts.
