Types of Corrosion important to electronic products and approaches to their prevention are reviewed. An equivalent circuit representation of corrosion reactions is useful to describe corrosion prevention techniques. Potential impacts of corrosion on electronic products are discussed, as well as under what conditions will a corrosion reaction occur in practice and if the electromagnetic wave from the operating circuit or from an adjacent circuit will influence the occurrence and rate of corrosion reactions. Acceleration Factors and available ASTCF tests are reviewed. A procedure to formulate a ASTCF is given using known types of acceleration factors. The oxidation of copper is used as a simple example to formulate a ASTCF. There are some ASTCFs that will simulate the natural environment. The laboratory simulated ASTCF should be correlated with natural environments to be a useful test, except for perhaps, comparative testing. There are cases where the ASTCF may be more severe than the natural environment.
