Enel has been working on a hydrogen program dealing with both hydrogen production and utilisation, aiming at starting the transition to the hydrogen economy in a short term and at leading this transition in Europe. The first part of the program is the construction of a 10 to 20 MW hydrogen-fed gas turbine in co-generative configuration at Enel's Fusina power plant (Venice), able to couple high efficiency fuel utilisation with very low nitrogen-oxide emissions. The paper presents the thermodynamic analysis of the co-generative cycle which led to the process definition of the plant to be built. In particular, effects of steam injection, which should enable to control NO{sub}x emissions to low limits while achieving very efficient energy conversion systems, are analysed. Electric and thermal fuel utilisation efficiencies are shown, both in design and off-design conditions. This kind of plants can represent a very effective answer to the growing energy requirements of densely populated areas, as it can be installed in their close proximity allowing electricity generation and district heating with no additional side effects on the environment.
