REDUCING THE ENVIRONMENTAL POWER PLANT IMPACT AN OPPORTUNITY TO INTRODUCE MODERN DCS

Reducing the environmental Power Plant impact is one of the most important issues concerning the activity of CPPE, the main Portuguese Electric Power Generation Company. This situation has been an opportunity to revamping the control systems and to introduce modern DCS, in order to prepare CPPE to face the increasing competitiveness of the Thermal Generation market. Some technical aspects collected from the CPPE experience, are presented in this paper, and the collaboration between plant operators and engineering project team is also viewed as a key aspect to achieve success in this kind of projects. This paper focus on CPPE experience in the introduction of modern DCS and in order to promote the above referred discussion, the results from two case studies will be presented: two 125 MW fuel oil/natural gas fired units and one 314 MW coal fired unit.
